POSTER - OCToPus: Semantic-aware Concurrency Control for Blockchain Transactions

Many blockchain implementations offer APIs to “only” send and receive money between accounts. In this paper, we characterize this simple and rigid programming model and propose OCToPus, a deterministic concurrency control scheme that uses a semantic-aware fast path and a GPU-accelerated directed acyclic graph-based fallback path to aggressively parallelize the execution of a block with the goal of minimizing the number of transactions that cannot be committed due to insufficient account balance. OCToPus achieves up to 2.3x the throughput and a 35% latency reduction compared to existing semantic-aware concurrency controls, and at least 7x the throughput of general-purpose concurrency controls.
