STAF 2023
Tue 18 - Fri 21 July 2023 Leicester, United Kingdom

The workshop will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion on state-of-the-art work in agile MDE, both from industrial practice and academic research. It aims to:

  • Enable practitioners and researchers to exchange information on the challenges and potential solutions for agile MDE approaches;

  • Help identify successful approaches and keys to success in applying agile MDE;

  • To expand and develop the research/practitioner community in the field.

Agile methods and model-driven engineering (MDE) both originated in the late 1990’s/early 2000’s, and offered new but apparently opposed solutions for the high failure rate of conventional software development processes.

Initial MDE process concepts, such as the Rational Unified Process, appeared to be heavyweight and traditional staged development approaches. MDE was considered to be more appropriate for systems with relatively low requirements change.

However, during the following decades, businesses and industries were facing situations where requirements change and rapid system evolution were becoming the norm. Much work on agile MDE has been carried out in this practical context, and agile MDE processes have been adopted in the telecoms, automotive, railway and avionics sectors.

Research in combining Agile methods and MDE concepts has also progressed, with various solutions proposed for the successful integration of agile and MDE, in order to take advantage of the benefits of both approaches. MDE offers the possibility of enhancing Agile approaches with greater automation, to accelerate the delivery of value to customers and increase process reliability, whilst increasing MDE agility can lead to more user-centered and flexible MDE processes.

Due to the projected transport strikes on the 20th July, the workshop will be run in hybrid mode (online/in-person). To attend online, select the online registration option on the STAF registration page.

Call for Papers

The workshop will focus on the issue of agility in model-driven development, and how concepts from Agile methods can help to improve the flexibility and usability of MDE in practice.

Topics include:

  • Integration of agile and model-driven methods

  • Lightweight modelling and tools for agile MDE

  • Acceleration and automation of MDE processes, using AI support or other approaches

  • Industrial applications of agile MDE

  • Agile MDE for safety-critical systems

  • Agile MDE approaches for reverse-engineering and re-engineering.

Two kinds of papers can be submitted:

  • Full papers (10 pages + 1 page for references)

  • Short papers (4 pages + 1 page for references), including initial ideas papers and practitioners reports.

All submissions must be written in English, adhere to the CEUR Style single-column formatting guidelines, and be submitted through EasyChair. All submissions must be original work and must not have been previously published or being under review elsewhere.

Each paper will be reviewed by three committee members. Accepted papers will be published in the volume of proceedings for the STAF 2023 satellite and co-located events published with CEUR-WS.
